Brief History. This region was inhabited in ancient times by the Belgae, the region was part of the Roman and Carolingian empires before breaking up into a number of feudal states during the Middle Ages. Modern Belgium acquired its independence from the Netherlands in 1830. It was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II, but stayed neutral in both. The country prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU.
