Brief History. Bolivia was once a part of the Incan Empire, the area was conquered by Spain in the 16th century. The country was named after Simón Bolívar, who helped win its independence from Spain in 1825. Its subsequent history is marked by a great number of coups and countercoups. Comparatively democratic civilian rule was established in 1982. However, the problems of deep-seated poverty, social unrest and illegal drug production remained.
