Central American Flags

Central America is located between North and South America, but is considered part of the North American Continent. It is surrounded by 3 bodies of water: the Caribbean Sea to the northeast, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest and the Gulf of Mexico to the north.

Quick facts about Central America:

• Before Columbus' visit, most of Central America was part of the Mesoamerican civilization.
• Most of the region lies atop what is called the Caribbean Plate, an area frequented by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
• The Aztec Empire built many cities throughout Central America.
