Clipperton Island Flag

Flags of the World > Clipperton Island Flag

Brief History. Clipperton was originally discovered by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. It was later named after John Clipperton, an English pirate and privateer who in 1705 fought the Spanish during the early eighteenth century and used the island as a hidden base for his raids on shipping. The island was claimed by both Mexico and France. Arbitration eventually awarded the island to France, which took possession in 1935.
