Flags of the World > Falkland Islands Flag
Brief History. This island was discovered by the English navigators in 1592, but the first landing (English) did not occur until 1690, and the first settlement (French) was not established until 1764. Two years later, the colony was turned to Spain, and have since been the subject of a territorial dispute between Britain and Spain, and later between Britain and Argentina. The UK asserted its claim to the islands by establishing a naval garrison there in 1833. After Argentine invaded the islands in 1982, the British responded and with the use of force made Argentine surrender the island during the same year.
