Flags of the World > French Southern and Antarctic Lands Flag
Brief History. Islands were discovered and claimed by the French in 1840. They contain no permanent inhabitants and are visited only by researchers studying the native fauna. They became a French overseas territory in 1995. Formerly, they were administered from Paris by an administrateur supérieur assisted by a secretary-general; since December 2004, however, their adminstrator has been a préfet, currently Michel Champon, with headquarters in Saint-Pierre on Réunion Island. The "capital" (main base) of the territory is Martin-de-Viviès on Île Amsterdam.
