Brief History. In the early 1500s the area of Lebanon became part of the Ottoman Empire. After World War I and the breakup of the Ottoman Empire Lebanon became a French Mandate from 1923 until its independence in 1946. In April 1975 a devasting civil war broken out across the country that lasted until 1991. On June 6, 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon. The last Israeli troops withdrew from the country on May 24, 2000.
