Brief History. The literal center of the Balkans, Macedonia is composed of a complex ethnic mix. The region of Macedonia was a Roman province in 146 BC and was part of the Byzantine realm although its population was shifting in response to invasion by Slavic peoples. The current population is unrelated to the Macedonians of ancient times (Alexander the Great or his father, Philip of Macedonia, for example). Modern Macedonia was a part of Yugoslavia for a long time. In 1991, Macedonia gained its independence peacefully from Yugoslavia. The undetermined status of neighboring Kosovo, implementation of the Framework Agreement - which ended the 2001 ethnic Albanian armed insurgency - and a weak economy continue to be challenges for Macedonia.
