Brief History. In the history of Serbia, there are three periods that deserve mentioning. 1. Medieval Serbia, with it's roots dating back to 7th century. Serbia became a kingdom in 1346. but it soon disintegrated and fell to the Ottoman Turks, after the famous Battle of Kosovo in 1389. 2. The Ottoman period was a defining one in the history of the country; Slavic, Byzantine, Arabic and Turkish cultures suffused. Many contemporary cultural traits can be traced back to Ottoman period. 3. Modern Serbia was formed after gaining it's independence in 1815. and after going through many stages of uniting with the neighboring Slavic republics, the union finally disintegrated through a long process which started in 1991, leaving independent Republic of Serbia as it's resulting form of existence.
