Flags of the World > Sierra Leone Flag
Brief History. Another African country dominated initially by the Portuguese, Sierra Leone became a British colony in 1808. The diverse population has been a hallmark of Sierra Leone, comprised of native peoples and the descendants of ex-slaves. Since independence was attained in 1961, the country has withstood great difficulties, including a civil war raging on-and-off for the better part of the 1990s and a situation which has still not been fully resolved. The government is slowly reestablishing its authority after the 1991 to 2002 civil war that resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people (about one-third of the population).
