Brief History. Alaskan mainland was discovered by Vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikov who have been working for the Russians, and thus became a part of Russian Empire. It was later sold to the U.S. for $7,200,00. The Alaskan Gold rush of 1898 resulted in a mass influx of more than 30,000 people. Since then, Alaska has contributed billions of dollars worth of products to the U.S. economy.
