Brief History. Marcos de Niza was the first European to explore Arizona, entering the area with an intention to search for the mythical Seven Cities of Gold. After the Mexican War, most of the Arizona territory became part of the U.S. and the southern part, which remained Mexican for some time more, was purchased in 1853. Arizona history is rich in legends of America's Old West, being the state where Indian chiefs Geronimo and Cochise led their people against the frontiersmen. This is also the state of the West's most popular shoot out - the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.
