Brief History. California was discovered by Spanish navigator Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 and its first mission was established in 1769. It became U.S. territory in 1847. Shortly after, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, starting the famous California Gold Rush and bringing the settlers to the state in large numbers.California became the most popular U.S. state in 1946, leaving New York behind.
