Brief History. Ponce de León discovered Florida in 1513, seeking the mythical "Fountain of Youth" It was firs claimed for Spain, and was sold to the U.S. in 1819. Florida's history in the early 19th century was marked by wars with the Seminole Indians. Florida's economy rests on a solid base of tourism, manufacturing, and agriculture. Florida's major tourist attractions are Miami Beach, Palm Beach, St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale. Florida is also home to the NASA Kennedy Space Center.
