Brief History. First explored by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in 1805-1806, region of present-day Idaho became a part of the Oregon country held jointly by the U.S. and Great Britain. First U.S. settlement in Idaho was established by Mormons in 1860. After gold discovery in 1860, prospectors swarmed into the territory, but they left nothing more then a few ghost towns behind them. In 1870s, Idaho was the battleground for a series of battles between U.S. forces and the Nez Percé, Bannock, and Sheepeater tribes. Points of interest are the Craters of the Moon National Monument; Nez Percé National Historic Park and the State Historical Museum.
