Brief History. Region of Illinois was first visited by French explorer Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet in 1673. French established first permanent settlement at present-day St. Louis in 1699, and Great Britain obtained the region in 1763. Significant episodes in the state's early history include opening of the Erie Canal, Black Hawk War and rise of Abraham Lincoln from farm laborer to president. Some of the state's attractions include the Lincoln Home, the Lincoln Tomb, and the restored Old State Capitol in Springfield.
