Brief History. French explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet were the first Europeans to visit the area, in 1673. The U.S. obtained control of the area in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase, which was followed by heavy fighting between white settlers and Indians throughout 19th century. Iowa became a state in 1846, with capital being Iowa City, and Des Moines became the new capital in 1857. Iowa soon became heavily developed agricultural state, which it still is. Tourist attractions include Fort Dodge Historical Museum, Fort, and Stockade.
