Brief History. This region was claimed for France in 1682. It was later sold to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Just before the Civil War, the conflict between the pro- and anti- slavery forces earned the region the title of Bleeding Kansas. Today, Kansas is well developed industrial and agricultural center, and Wichita is one of the nation's leading aircraft-manufacturing centers. Points of interest include the Kansas History Center, the Eisenhower, Presidential Library, John Brown's cabin, re-created Front Street in Dodge City, Fort Larned, Fort Leavenworth, and Fort Riley.
