Brief History. Region of New York was claimed for France in 1609, and the first permanent settlement was established at Fort Orange (now Albany) in 1624. One year later Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan Island from the Indians for trinkets worth about 60 Dutch guilders and founded the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (now New York City), which was surrendered to the English in 1664. New York developed commercially extremely rapidly, continued to be commercial center of the U.S. to the present-day. New York major tourist attraction include Castle Clinton, Statue of Liberty, National Monuments; Niagara Falls; U.S. Military Academy at West Point and many others.
