Brief History. This area exploration began in 1743 when Louis-Joseph and François Verendrye came from France to search for a route to the Pacific. The U.S. acquired the region as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. First permanent settlement, Fort Pierre, was established in 1817. Settlement of South Dakota begun after the gold discovery in the Black Hills in 1874. Today, South Dakota is a powerful agricultural and manufacturing state. Famous tourist attractions include The Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, etc.
