Flags of the World > Virgin Islands Flag
Brief History. During the 17th century, the archipelago was divided into two territorial units. One was English and the other was Danish. In the 18th and early 19th centuries the islands' economy was driven by sugarcane, produced by slaves. The US purchased the Danish portion in 1917, which had been in economic decline since the abolition of slavery in 1848.
