Brief History. In 1899 the US annexed Wake Island for a cable station. In 1940-41 an important air and naval base was constructed. Japanese captured the island in December 1941 and held it until the end of World War II. The island's airstrip has been used by the US military since 1974. Access to the atoll is currently restricted to official government business.
